7 Tools for Switchers

I just read a blog post about 7 tools for easing the switch from PC to Mac. Here is my take on some of these tools. The others may be useful to you (instant messaging, remote computer access) but are not to me.

  • File Renamer: A somewhat useful tool but more useful would be guidance for the different naming conventions mentioned in the blog post but which is nowhere to be seen in the actual application.
  • Screen Captures: They recommend Capture. I have been using InstantShot! which I find quite flexible. I don’t know how the two programs compare.
  • Firefox: Pretty obvious and I’ve been using it right from the start because I’m used to it. I will give Safari more of a chance at some point in the future.
  • Wifi locating: If you use NetStumbler to find wifi hotspots then I’m sure you would want to know about MacStumbler
  • File/Folder Sizes: Finally the last and best tool for me is WhatSize which lists (in decreasing order) the size of folders and files within a hard drive, folder, or any other logical starting point. It is really fast and helps highlight where your space is being used. There are programs that do this visually and they are useful for quickly pointing out big files but having a text list with file/folder sizes is very good for systematically examining your disks. The blog entry says that this mimics some of the behaviour of Windows Explorer but I’ve never discovered that before so maybe I’m deficient in my use of that program on the PC.
